for the first time, Tesla is showing its vision of a vehicle that will transport people driverless as a robotaxi to a wider public in Europe. The prototype of the "Cybercab" will be on display in show rooms in Berlin and London from November 22 to December 8, 2024. Later, people in Oslo, Stockholm and Amsterdam will also get to see the robotaxi.Paris
When production of the Tesla Cybercab will begin
Tesla CEO Elon Musk had unveiled the long-announced robotaxi to a select audience at a Hollywood studio in Los Angeles on October 10, 2024. The Cybercab has two upward-opening gullwing doors and looks like a coupé based on Tesla's bestseller. The two-seater does not have a steering wheel or accelerator and brake pedals.Model 3
The concept is for passengers to tell the Cybercab via an app where it should take them. Musk said at the Hollywood event that production of the vehicles is expected to start in 2026. At the same time, he admitted that he tends to be too optimistic about schedules. A possible market launch in Europe also remains unclear.Tesla
The competition is already driving autonomously
Robotaxis are already on the road in the USA, but not from Tesla, but mainly from Google's sister company Waymo. Their cars make more than 100,000 trips with passengers in four US cities every week without a human at the wheel. In San Francisco, Waymo's Jaguar electric vehicles, which have been converted into self-driving cars, are now part of the cityscape. Robotaxi developers such as the tech company Baidu are also making rapid progress in China.
Waymo and Tesla are pursuing different technical concepts. While Google's sister company equips its vehicles with more expensive laser radars, Tesla CEO Musk insists that self-driving cars can only work with cameras. However, many industry experts doubt that enough information about road traffic and the surrounding area can be collected with it. (With material from dpa)
